Cation exchange capacity indicates the ability of a soil to “hold” onto positively charged ions including plant nutrients such as potassium, calcium, magnesium and ammonium. The CEC is largely determined by clay content and organic matter.
On this website, the data is presented as “effective” cation exchange capacity (ECEC). This is calculated by adding all the base cations (Ca++, Mg++, Na+, K+), plus exchangeable Al+++ and H+.
